Because he married before 1830, he does not appear in the 1830 census with his parents, the first surviving census of New Jersey, neither does he appear as a head of family, unfortunately.

3. Samuel BARCKALOW appears in the 1850 Federal census of New Jersey, Salem County, Upper Alloway Creek,p.162(taken Aug.12). He is age,43,(occ-Labourer) with wife, Rhoda,48; dau.,Renyannie,17; son, John,7; and dau., Alla Marinda,1, all b.NJ., except Samuel(b.PA.)

3. Samuel BARCKALOW appears in the 1860 Federal census of New Jersey, Salem County, Upper Alloway Creek,p.162(taken Aug.12). He is age,43,(occ-Labourer) with wife, Rhoda,58; son, John,17; dau., Alla Marinda,11, all b.NJ., except Samuel(b.PA.)

EVALUATING ANCESTRY PROBABILITIES:

It's possible Samuel's father could be Samuel BARKALOW(1760-1835), based on process of elimination, and if the spelling had morphed from a Philadelphia Burkelow line. His claim to have been born in Pennsylvania could be an error, perhaps due to being orphaned at an early age. The names of his children seem to offer no real clues.
