Burklow Orphan Lines - 2

Orphan lines, by definition, can be any lines with ancestral OR descendancy connection problems. They will invariably lack hard evidentiary documentation such as bibles, church or probate records.

Isaac Burklow(c1799-1850) of Union Co's,KY.

CHRONOLOGY OF COINCIDENTAL OR LINKABLE EVENTS:

1. ISAAC BURKLOW, is married in Union County, 29 Nov 1819, to Phoebe Ragsdale.

2. ISAAC BURKLOW also appears for the first time on tax rolls of 1819 with no land, but is assessed on the value of his one horse. The property on which he resides is described as a "Thomas Nauman patent". He is listed in the "Over 21-yrs." category. If true, his birthyear would have to be 1798 or earlier.

3. ISAAC V. BURKLOW, is enumerated in the 1820 Federal Census in Russelville, Logan Co.,KY. The census seems to corroborate the fact that he is married, but the census identifies two children, a boy and girl, under the age of 10 years. Since the census is supposed to be based upon anyone living in that household as of the first Monday in August,1820, it is difficult to explain why there are two children here at all. If they are Isaac and Phebe(Ragsdale) Burklow's, they would seemingly have to be twins, and, born two to three months premature. The oldest known surviving son of Isaac Burklow, was Uriah, born 5 Oct 1820, two months after the census "cutoff" date. Could they have had a set of fraternal twins between Nov.29,1819 and Aug.3,1820? Or, were they nephews of a deceased sibling, or did Phebe Ragsdale bring two children to the marriage with her?

4. ISAAC BURKLOW, in 1821, is taxed on land on Tradewater River in Union County, suggesting his brief stay in Russelville might have been either his "honeymoon" or just a job-hunting venture. His 1821 rental property was a "Thomas Wannon survey" and "Mary Morgan patent".

5. ISAAC BURKLOW appeared on existing tax lists from 1825 through 1844, variously as BERKLOW/BURKALOW/BURKLOW, then does not appear on any tax rolls during his final six years.

6. ISAAC BURKLOW in 1842, is taxed on the value of two horses, but no land. His oldest son, Uriah, on the same tax list, shows 50 acres and 4 horses on Tradewater River. Isaac may have defaulted to a retirement mode. He was probably living with Uriah, who would have been barely 21.

7. ISAAC V. BURKLOW appears in 1850 Federal Census of Crittenden County, District #1, residing with his son, Leroy Burklow's family. His older son, Uriah, was enumerated in District #2, also Crittenden County, but on a 4-acre Crooked Creek lot, for which he was taxed from 1847 through 1860. Isaac Burklow claimed age 50 as of June 1st. The census taker came by his Crittenden County residence on Aug.30,1850. He may have fudged on his age by a couple years to the census taker back in 1820.

8. ISAAC BURKLOW apparently died weeks or within a couple months of the Aug.30,1850 visit by the census taker. His widow, Phoebe(Ragsdale) Burklow, born 1796 in Virginia, very soon thereafter married, on 21 Apr 1851, Crittenden Co.,KY., Rivers Banks, a widower 20 years her senior. The property on which Isaac was residing with his son, Leroy, was listed in 1852 and later tax lists as being on Claylick Creek, the same recently discovered by Tom Burklow as being a couple miles northwest of Dycusburg, above Pinckneyville. The Burklow Family burial ground and cabin were among the discoveries.

EVALUATING ANCESTRY PROBABILITIES:

The association seems strong for linking Isaac to William V. Burkelow in a father-son relationship, as long as Isaac's birthyear is established as closer to 1800, plus or minus a year, than that given in 1820. None of the censuses credit William with being born prior to 1780, making the age Isaac gave(over 26) in the 1820 census highly suspect. If Isaac was born before 1794, William would have been, therefor, under 14 at Isaac's birth. Evidence from Isaac's War of 1812-1815 service suggests he was a young teenager, perhaps no more than 13 years. While residing briefly in Russelville,Logan Co., Isaac may have fudged on his age because all other censuses fail to corroborate the age given in 1820. In 1850, he claimed age 50, which may be closer to his correct age.

WILLIAM V. BURKELOW, is taxed in Union County in 1821 and 1822, but suddenly disappears permanently from any records in that county. He may have died, but then he may also be the same William Burkelow who appears the following year(1823) in Hickman County, one of several counties created in 1821 in the Jackson Purchase region. Calloway and Graves Counties are also formed from Hickman in 1821, and a John Burkelow(William's son?) is listed as a Juror in Graves County(1824). Miles H. Burkelow, age 19, marries his first wife, Eliza Roach(d/o Bryant Roach), 4 Aug 1825, in Calloway County, and he(Miles) and a William Burkelow are enumerated in the 1830 Calloway County census, although not near each other. I've determined Miles was residing somewhere near Wadesboro, which is now on the border with Marshall County, but can't pinpoint William's location yet. The census data cannot corroborate the two William Burkelow's being the same, unless the "Union County" William remarried, moved to Calloway County, and started a second family.
