Burklow Orphan Lines - 5

Orphan lines, by definition, can be any lines with ancestral OR descendancy connection problems. They will invariably lack hard evidentiary documentation such as bibles, church or probate records to complete the link in either direction.

Isaac Burkloe(c1755-1808) of Fayetteville, Cumberland Co.,NC.

CHRONOLOGY OF COINCIDENTAL OR LINKABLE EVENTS:

1. ISAAC BURKLOW appears in court records of Orange Co.,NC in 1778. He is a carpenter and cabinet maker hired to make benches and tables for the courts.

2. ISAAC BURKLOW has apparently moved to Fayetteville, Cumberland Co.,NC. April,1782, Isaac Burklow, among others, is summoned to appear to the next court as a juror.(Abstracts: Cumberland Co.,NC Court of Pleas, Vol.II.,p.34.)

15. ISAAC BURKLOW appears in the 1790 Fed. Census, Cumberland Co.,NC.,Fayetteville. He shows 5 males over 16yrs.,5 males under 16yrs., and 5 females. Knowing he has orphans in his household makes it difficult to assign all these people to Isaac's "family".

16. ISAAC BURKLOW is listed in the 1800 Fed. Census, Cumberland Co.,NC.,Fayetteville,p.351(12202-30212). Isaac Burkloe is over 45 years, but shows another male(and female) over 45 yrs. residing with him. Could be in-laws. Even at this point it is difficult to assign Isaac as having 11 children, 5 sons and 6 daughters.

17. ISAAC BURKLOW's death notice appeared in a Fayetteville,NC newspaper. His deathdate is listed as 25 Feb 1808, no age given. His widow, Hannah Burkloe, died 20 Dec 1809, as reported by the same newspaper, also no age given.

EVALUATING ANCESTRY PROBABILITIES:

Due to his occupation and stature in the community, Isaac Burkloe was appointed guardian to orphans and had numerous boys apprenticed to him to learn the trade of house carpenter and joiner. Some of them may have been billoted with him or bound to him to the extent they were also residing at his home. When a probate record for Isaac Burkloe was finally discovered, it named his widow, Hannah, and only 8 children: Isaac, Samuel, Elizabeth, Ann, Abigail, Mary, Donald C. and John.

As one could ascertain from the given data, Isaac Burkloe had a relative named Philander Burkloe(by age proximity, likely his brother). Philander Burkloe died in Oct.1786, leaving a widow, Flora, and two sons, Daniel and Philander,Jr. By Jan.1789, Flora may have died too, leaving the boys orphans to be raised by their appointed guardian, Robert Mitchell, who may have been an uncle and brother to Flora. Philander,Jr. seems to be the same who returned to Newark,NJ and died there 10 Jun 1824, in his 39th year. Daniel Burkloe(b.c1782,NC), may be the same who married Rebecca Reynolds, 28 Oct 1801, in Campbell Co.,KY, and left an orphan line in the Cincinnati area.

It is possible that Isaac Burklow's sudden arrival about 1778/79 in North Carolina might be connected to the Philadelphia Co.,PA taxes being assessed in 1779 on an estate of another Isaac Burkelow, assumed to be recently deceased. The Burklow/Burkelow's of Philadelphia are descendants of Reynier Van Burkelow(1659-1713), who settled near Philadelphia at Germantown for a few years before moving to Kent Co.,Delaware. Numerous Burkelows of this line appear in Philadelphia tax records from 1740-1820 and all seem to have professions from tinsmiths and silversmiths to jewelers, clockmakers and carpenters.

But, before we can even draw assumptions about the coincidence of Isaac Burklow's time of arrival in NC, we have one very interesting name appearing in Vol.I of the Abstracts from Cumberland Co.,NC.,Court of Pleas, which covers the period Oct.1755 to Jan.1779. On p.139, there is a reference to "a road to be laid off from John Martin's heirs ford on the Cape Fear River, to Archibald McNeill's on Lower Little River, John Stewart to be appointed overseer. The following to be a jury to lay out said road: (among others), Richard Burkloe."

The only references to a Richard Burkloe I've seen(not to discount the fact that Richard is also "Derrick" among Dutch given names) are a marriage and a baptism in New York City's Trinity Church betw.1754-1759. The marriage: Richard Burkloe to Aletta(Letty) Covenover,13 Aug 1754,(NYGBR,Vol.69,1938,p.277,"Records of Trinity Church Parish."). The baptism: "24 Jun 1759,Mary Burkloe Parents- Richard and Letty Burkloe. (NYGBR,Vol.68,p.71,"Records of Trinity Church Parish.")

Because Isaac Burkloe was 45+ yrs. in 1800(b. bef.1755), I assumed he and Philander might be older children of Richard and Aletta(Covenover) Burkloe. Unfortunately, I can't account for the gap between Richard and Aletta's marriage in 1754 and the first recorded baptism of a child in the same church 5 years later. They may have moved into New Jersey in 1754 and returned to the old neighborhood by 1759. As it stands, we can't even find a Richard or Derrick among the sons of Philander or Isaac of Cumberland Co.,NC.

But, the appearance of Richard Burkloe in Cumberland Co.,NC just before the appearances of Isaac and Philander Burkloe in the same place, cannot be easily ignored.
