Mississippi Co.,MO. Burkelow line

CHRONOLOGY OF COINCIDENTAL OR LINKABLE EVENTS:

(The text of these probate records were e-mailed to me on 1/11/05 by Dorothy Renaud, who found my web pages and volunteered the data based upon her belief they could be useful to someone of this line. Her gesture of genealogical samaritanism was at her own initiation and not by request. It couldn't have come at a more opportune time as I was already deep into a review of these particular orphan lines. Her source is given as "Mississippi County, Missouri Loose Probate Papers 1845-1899." She notes that Mississippi County was formed in 1845 from Scott Co.,MO. That fact could, of course, mean the widow, Elizabeth Burkelow's husband's death and probate record might be locatable in Scott County. DB.)

EVALUATING ANCESTRY PROBABILITIES:

There are at least three names to consider when trying to identify the husband of Elizabeth Burkelow(c1805-1846). Her oldest son was named William Johnson Burkelow(1826-1853), and the second son was named James Wesley Burkelow(1829-1851). William, John and James seem supportable as names to research. Because they were all born in Kentucky, that also seems the logical place to start looking. If the age of the father of these three Burkelow children was anywhere close to their mother's age, he would have to have been born between 1800 and 1806. It would also be safe to say he should be locatable in the 1830 census and possibly the 1840 census, unless Elizabeth, the youngest, was born posthumous to his death, which could have occurred in late 1839 or early 1840.

It sounds like a case of discovering who was caught in the census of 1830, but went suddenly missing in 1840. If Elizabeth was born in Kentucky within months of her father's death, there's a chance her father died in Kentucky.

Could he be the same William Burkelow who appears in an 1823 Hickman Co.,KY tax roll, or, the John Burkelow who was a juror in Graves Co.,KY in 1824, or the John Burkelow on p.22 of the 1830 census of Hickman Co.,KY.

Based upon the 1830 Fed. Census, there needs to be two males, age (0-5), in the census data, or, if the oldest son, William J. Burkelow(age 24 in 1850) was credited with being five years old in 1830, there could be just one male(0-5), and one male(5-10). If there were no other children who survived to be included in the 1830 census, then the data should look this this: 2000100000 - 1000100000, or, 1100100000 - 1000100000.

A John Burkelow, as mentioned, was enumerated in 1830 Hickman Co.,KY.,p.22. His data shows the necessary 2 males(0-5), and a female(0-5) and the necessary adult male and female(20-30) the profile demands. There are only two flaws which could be easily explained, but could also derail the theory. There is a male(15-20), who seems too old to be a son of John Burkelow, so must be a younger brother or nephew, perhaps orphaned, a common problem in those days requiring intervention by relatives. He could also be an indentured farm-hand. There is also an extra female(5-10), perhaps an orphaned niece, sister, or a first born daughter of John Burkelow who didn't survive. The fact that this John Burkelow was living in Hickman County, directly across from Belmont,Mississippi Co.,MO., creates a basis for strong consideration.

The John Burkelow who married Elizabeth Hall in Union Co.,KY., 19 Nov 1819, seems like a good prospect or, at least, a person of interest in the investigation. It could explain the Phebe Hall who became the guardian of the two youngest Burkelow children, and the guardian of Elizabeth (Burkelow) Grinstead's orphaned son, Henry Deal Grinstead, in 1867. If not, we all get to continue looking.
