Barkuloo Orphan Lines - 5

Orphan lines, by assigned definition here, can be any lines with ancestral OR descendancy connection problems. They will invariably lack hard evidentiary documentation as, for example, bibles, church or probate records.

Willem Willemse Barkeloo(c1665-a1715), of the New York Barkuloo Lines

CHRONOLOGY OF COINCIDENTAL OR LINKABLE EVENTS:

1. WILLEM BARKELOO, is born about 1665 in Gravesend, Kings Co.,NY., a son of Willem Jans Lubberdinck van Borculo by 1st wife, Cornelia Van Sallee.

2. WILLEM BARKELOO, is "orphaned" (in terms of the era) by the death of his father in November,1683. Also, by the definition of that era, at age eighteen he would have been adult enough to hold a job, an occupation for which he was likely apprenticed at an early age, but may not have attained mastery.

3. WILLEM BARKELOO, marries about 1684/85, Anneke or Janneke Jurianse, parents unidentified. They belong to the Flatbush DR Church in Brooklyn, as four children will be christened there between 1685 and 1695.

4. JURRIE BARKELOO, first child of Willem and Anneke, is baptised 20 Dec 1685 in the Flatbush DR Church.

5. BARBARA & ELSJE BARKELOO, daughters of Willem and Anneke, are baptised in the Flatbush DR Ch., on 9 Jan 1687, and 9 Sep 1688, respectively.

6. WILLEM BARKELOO,in 1687, took an Oath of Allegiance in Flatlands. His brother, Jan(John) takes a similar Oath at Gravesend in September,1687.

7. JAN BARKELOO, last known child of Willem and Anneke, is christened 4 May 1695 in the Brooklyn DR Church(formerly Flatbush).

8. WILLEM BARKELOO, is listed as among those residing in a 1698 census of Brooklyn. By then his three known daughters would be 10,11 and 13, and his son, Jan(John) age three. Despite being married with family, he may have remained in residence on the original property of his parents, both deceased. At the time of his marriage in 1684/85, he had two older married sisters, but five younger siblings, four of whom were under ten years of age. Willem's brother, Jan, presumed by Mrs. Spell to be older(by traditional naming protocols of the day), took an Oath of Allegiance in September 1687, but then disappears from sight. If John died shortly after taking his Oath, Willem would have assumed the position of oldest surviving son of Willem Jans Lubberdinck van Borculo and thus would also inherit the responsibility for maintaining, or administering to the disposing of, the family estate.

9. WILLEM BARKELOO, as of 20 Jan 1715, is deceased. His widow is residing in Hempstead, Queens County. It is apparent, therefor, that Willem did not live beyond age 50. Unfortunately, the nearly 20-year gap in his whereabouts creates a serious problem trying to determine if he and his wife had more children. Because the disappearance of Willem and his family seem so complete, it may turn out that his patronym evolved into his surname while living in English communities. He may have become better known, thereafter, as William Williamson, as his father once was listed as "Willem Jonson", which nearly transitioned into William Johnson or Jansen, permanently.

EVALUATING ANCESTRY PROBABILITIES:

As you can see, no conclusion can be drawn unless there are some new threads to aid us in tracking members of the Willem Willemse Barkeloo family.
