BARKALOW, JAMES J.(Bio) (From History of the New Jersey Coast, published,1902)

James J. Barkalow, a member of the Barkalow family, whose genealogy is elsewhere given, was born in Freehold, Monmouth County,NJ., August 23,1835, son of Henry and Eleanor(Errickson) Barkalow, both born in Freehold Township, the former in 1803, the latter in 1802.

He received only an ordinary district school education. His father dying when he was young[note-Henry V. died in 1858], he was compelled to earn his own living and recalls working on a farm for twenty-five cents a day. This farm is across the road, opposite the farm which he now owns. He early learned the carpenter's trade and commenced housekeeping in Freehold with his mother, whom it was his ambition to comfortably support. One of the most satisfying recollections of his life is that he was able to provide his aged mother with all the comforts of life during her declining years. He made for her a home until she died at his house in 1885. Mr. Barkalow worked at his trade in Freehold until 1862; he then bought and carried on the undertaker's business in Freehold in which he was successful. Suffering from ill health, he relinquished this business and followed farming for two years. He then reengaged in the undertaker's business at Freehold, continuing from 1872 till 1895. He then retired from active business, purchasing a farm one mile from Freehold, and now spends his time leisurely between his farm and his fine residence on South Street.

In November,1859, Mr. Barkalow was married to Roxana Garrett. They have had four children; John V., Emma D., Kate and Harry. John V. is in the Pennsylvania Railroad service. In 1881, he married Medora Sherwood and resides in Camden,NJ. They have two children, Harold and Nelly. Emma D. is now Mrs. Morris L. Rarey. Kate is now Mrs. Edwin Thompson, of Freehold, and has one child, Edwin. The youngest child, Harry, lives at home, and is a graduate of a commercial college.

BARKALOW, EDWARD CORLIES (Bio) (From History of the Monmouth County,Vol.II, published,1922)

A man who has been, for more than twenty years, successfully engaged in the express business, requires no introduction to the citizens of his own community, now, indeed, to many living beyond its boundary lines. This is the case with Mr. Barkalow, of Spring Lake, who is almost equally well-known for his activity in fraternal circles and for his public-spirited interest in community affairs.

Job S. Barkalow, grandfather of Edward Corlies Barkalow, was born at, or near, Farmingdale,N.J., and was descended from a minister who came from Holland in the early part of the seventeenth century and settled in that vicinnity[correction note- the immigrant, Willem Jans van Borculo(c1621-1683), who arrived circa 1656, was never described as being a minister], dying at New Bedford,N.J.[note-sounds like he confused immigrant with Edwin's ancestor, Rev. Matthias D. Barkalow(1787-1827)]. Job S. Barkalow was a farmer and a blacksmith. He married, and he and his wife were the parents of two sons; Matthias, mentioned below, and Edward Corlies. Job S. Barkalow died thirty years ago at the age of seventy.

Matthias Barkalow, son of Job S. Barkalow, was born at Farmingdale, but went as a boy to New Bedford where he spent the remainder of his life as a farmer. According to family tradition, he was a Democrat. He married Lavinia Allgor, born at New Bedford, daughter of James and Ellen(Smith) Allgor. Mrs. Barkalow died in 1916, at the age of seventy-one, and the death of her husband occurred in 1919, when he had reached the age of seventy-six.

Edward Corlies Barkalow, son of Matthias and Lavinia(Allgor) Barkalow, was born Sept.24,1876, at New Bedford,N.J., and received his education in the public schools of his native town. After engaging for a time in the livery business, at Belmar, he came, in 1900, to Spring Lake and purchased the express business of E.V. Patterson which he has conducted with marked success to the present time.

Though a staunch Democrat, Mr. Barkalow has never taken any active part in the political life of his community, preferring to concentrate his care and attention on his business responsibilities. He affiliates with Lodge No.89, Free and Accepted Masons, of Belmar,NJ; Goodwin Chapter, No.36, of Manasquan,NJ., the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, No.128, of Asbury Park; and the Knights of the Golden Eagle of Spring Lake,N.J. He and his family are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church.

Mr. Barkalow married, January 10,1904, at Spring Lake, Charlotte Anne Shibley, born at that place, daughter of Peter and Ellen(Curtis) Shibley, and they are the parents of one daughter, Ellen Louise, born at Spring Lake, April 22,1906.

If to be a successful, honorable business man and an upright, useful citizen is to make a record worthy of preservation, Edward Corlies Barkalow has certainly achieved that end. (James Hankins add the footnote that, "although this story is about Edward C. Barkalow, Mr. Henry Barkalow states that his uncle's correct name was Edwin.")
